Root Causes
The effect of men body image is the way media always set that we must look a certain way. Another thing is that magazines always portray a certain view of how men are supposed to look according to their body. Finally Also Corporation that by setting a type of expectations they really benefits from the sale of their products. These are the effects that the issue of men body image has in men all over the world. The issue is economical because as stated in the paragraph big corporation really benefit for the sale of their products. For example in the book “The Marketing Of Body Image: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Gender Effects In The U.S. And China” it states “However, it would seem that in an effort to sway consumer‟s long run satisfaction and persuade them to purchase products that will enhance their appearance, marketers are deliberately using images of models whose beauty and strength is unattainable for most consumers, at the expense of the consumer’s short-term level” [1] Also the issue turn in to a cultural because as society they show that it culturally you have to look a big and strong to be accepted. In the article “CONSIDERING THE INFLUENCE OF CULTURE ON BODY IMAGE: A LETTER TO THE EDITOR REGARDING SALMON ET AL.” it stated “An individual’s cultural and social background influences their beliefs and perceptions about body image, and making healthy food choices does not always contribute to the body image that someone is trying to achieve or maintain.”[2] The critical lens that I am applying is cultural criticism because the we here in the United States the people have always had a culture that bigger is always better. An we live up to that we have big cars, food, and even houses. This leads back to image because men are seen that in order to be accepted they have to be big and have some form of strength. These are the root causes and the critical lens that I am using for men body image.
